It was always going to be a difficult negotiation. Leaving a club you have been a member of for 50 years. You still want access to the benefits of club membership, but you want to set your own rules and not pay any membership fees.

Generally, the three main aims of the negotiations have been achieved; these are retention of sovereignty, trading with the European Union tariff and quota free and National Security.

The biggest fear of the agricultural industry was the imposition of tariffs; tariff free trade has removed that worry. However, health certificates and certificates of origin will now have to be produced for the goods exported to the European Union. With live or animal exports, a veterinary certificate will need to be provided, signed by a veterinary. There is currently an acute shortage of veterinaries. So what was gained in the tariffs and quotas was lost in the increase of bureaucracy and paperwork. There is also the possibility of these documents being checked at the point of departure and also at the point of arrival, thus giving rise to some delays.

Food prices will rise slightly, maybe 2 to 3%. In the initial stages, the major problem with food is continuation of supply. There will be some disruption in the first few months as importers tackle customs checks and the inevitable border delays, but supply chains should be able to adapt.

Specifically, the car industry may be subject to tariffs because a large proportion of the components come from outside the UK and it would be difficult to find a car that is totally of UK origin, which is what the EU requires for tariff free importing. Manufacturing, in general, was happy with the no-tariff regime. The biggest problem will be allowing for the customs checks and subsequent delays. Another problem will be the ‘one-stop’ syndrome.
