Her New Life and His Old Soul

I wondered If maybe… I could kiss you, Heather.

There was always something somber about him, something that seemed to weigh him down like a brick. His forehead seemed to be perpetually creased, pulling his eyebrows together. The expression seemed concerned or perhaps weary? She couldn’t quite tell. But this neighbor, just downstairs from her new apartment seemed to have a lot on his mind.

Heather felt drawn to him though, curious to learn what his story was. She was alone in a new place and she wanted a friend and he seemed lonely as well. She made a point of always saying hello to him and asking him how his day had been, though she only received the most curt responses and he never inquired about her. But she persisted, hoping to win him over eventually.

“Plans for the weekend?” She asked him as he sifted through the mail in the tiny lobby of the brownstone they lived in.

“I’m sorry, what?” He looked up at her, confused, his face doing that thing again where his brow was furrowed. But his eyes, she noticed, were blue and vibrant.

“Do you have any plans for the weekend?” She repeated herself.

“No,” he replied, shaking his head, looking back down at his mail before walking around her towards the stairs.

“Maybe you should come over for a beer? Or wine? Or maybe ice cream, if you don’t drink? I’m just upstairs from you.” She followed him closely on the narrow staircase. He stopped and looked back at her. He seemed lost, unsure. “Please, it doesn’t have to be anything more, just drinks with the new neighbor.” He sighed deeply.

“Maybe,” he replied, nodding his head, then turned away and continued on to his apartment.

It seemed like progress. But Friday night came and went and he didn’t stop by. So on Saturday, Heather decided to come to him, bringing a bottle of red along with her. He opened the door and the half smile that tugged at his lips when she held up the bottle couldn’t be disguised.

“If Mohammed doesn’t come to the mountain, the mountain will have to come to Mohammed,” she twisted around the old proverb.

He gestured with his hand for her to come in. She headed right into the kitchen…
