How does the internet function?

Before we get into what the Internet is, let’s define “network.” A network is a collection of interconnected computers that can send data to one another. A computer network is similar to a social circle, which is a group of people who all know each other, exchange information on a regular basis, and coordinate activities together.

One computer can communicate with another computer in a distant network owing to the Internet because computers connect to one another within networks and these networks all connect with one another. This allows computers all around the world to exchange information quickly.

Through the use of wires, cables, radio waves, and other networking infrastructure, computers may communicate with one another and the Internet. All information received via the Internet is converted into “bits,” which are electrical or optical pulses that the receiving computer decodes. These bits are transmitted at the speed of light through the wires, cables, and radio waves. The Internet operates more quickly the more bits that can be sent across these wires and cables at once.

The Internet has no central command. As opposed to that, it is a distributed networking system, which means it is not reliant on any one particular machine. Any piece of hardware or software that can send and receive data properly (by, for example, employing the appropriate networking protocols) is able to participate in the Internet.

The distributed nature of the Internet makes it resilient. Computers, servers, and other networking hardware constantly connect and disconnect from the Internet without affecting how the Internet functions — unlike a computer, which may not function at all if a component is missing. Even on a large scale, if a server, an entire data center, or an entire region of data centers fails, the rest of the Internet can continue to function .

There are two main concepts that are fundamental to the way the Internet functions: packets and protocols.

A packet is a small segment of a larger message in networking. Each packet contains data as well as information about the data. The “header” is information about the packet’s contents that goes at the front of the packet so that the receiving machine knows what to do with it. Consider how some consumer products include assembly instructions to help you understand the purpose of a packet header.

When data is transmitted over the Internet, it is first divided into smaller packets, which are then converted into bits. Various networking devices, such as routers and switches, route the packets to their destination. When the packets arrive at their destination, the receiving device reassembles them in the correct order so that the data can be used or displayed.

There are protocols for sending packets between devices on the same network (Ethernet), sending packets between networks (IP), ensuring packets arrive in order (TCP), and formatting data for websites and applications (HTTP). There are protocols for routing, testing, and encryption in addition to these foundational protocols. And, for different types of content, there are alternatives to the protocols listed above; for example, streaming video frequently uses UDP rather than TCP.

A wide range of hardware and infrastructure is required to make the Internet accessible to all. Some of the most important types are as follows:

Depending on their destination, routers route packets to different computer networks. Routers act as Internet traffic cops, directing Internet traffic to the appropriate networks.

Switches connect devices that share a single network. They use packet switching to forward packets to the correct devices. They also receive outbound packets from those devices and pass them along to the right destination.
