Your guide to Limiting Beliefs

Understanding, recognizing and then overcoming limiting beliefs and live a life of abundance

We keep telling stories to ourselves and act accordingly. We have stories that motivates us to move forward and stories that holds us.

Stories that holds us, are result of limiting beliefs. I can’t, because…

Thoughts like- I am too young , I am too old, I am too fat, I am too weak, I am not qualified, I am new, I cannot change, I have a weak personality, I hate this, I know everything, I am too sensitive, I come from a weak background, I am unlucky, I am poor, I have no support, I am all alone, and all such thoughts are limiting beliefs.

These are self sabotaging behaviors, resulting from the negative stories we keep telling ourselves.

Beliefs are created from memories and experiences of our pains and pleasures over a period of time. How we interpret our experiences based on internal and external conditions, gets converted into belief with time. Our emotions play an important part in developing our belief.

In our journey through life we collect various information, evidences, facts, concepts, which forms our perception for different things and conditions.

These perceptions, gets converted into our belief over a period of time. It’s a continuous process.

Beliefs are formed over a period of time and thus are deeply embodied in our nervous system due to repeated validation with our experiences with time.

We act as per our beliefs and feel comfort in that.

It’s important to understand that all beliefs are basically neutral in nature and work against or in favour, based on conditions.

For example, belief like “I’m too old”, can work well to take care of certain precautions required to be taken with the depleting health conditions but can go against us if it stops us to work on our financial, intellectual and spiritual activities. With changing conditions, the outlook needs to be changed.

The good news is, beliefs can be changed with proper understanding of their impact with changing conditions. Proper understanding is essential to have right outcome and take best advantage of different beliefs.

We now know, belief are basically neutral in nature. The limiting factor of any belief is conditional.

The same belief can work in our favour for certain conditions and can go against us under different conditions.

To achieve best results, we must align our WHY with our beliefs.

For better clarity, let’s understand that for every person, the requirements are different in different stages of life. Our requirements as kid will not be the same as a teen and would be different in youth and middle age, to very different as we grow old. Further, for every person this will be different, depending upon his goals, purpose and conditions.

Whenever our reaction to a situation is of resistance, like procrastination, fear, embarrassment, uncomfortable, complain, worry etc. it can be related to limiting belief.

For example, you are planning to do something new which you feel can be of great benefit to your professional career. However, you are not taking real action due to certain resistance popping up in your thinking. Stronger the resistance, more it’s related to limiting beliefs at work which are working back of mind.

Once you identify a situation that’s important to act upon, but the internal resistance stops you to act in the right direction, it’s time to pickup the signal as function of limiting belief.

Our limiting beliefs are assumptions that we create to a particular situation which in fact are not the reality.

We need to understand the cause of our assumption and the best way is to ask ourselves questions to dig deep into it. More we ask, better clarity we get.

We can ask questions like -

These are only some sample questions. When we start questioning, more and more related questions will popup. Keep working on it and the better way is to, write down the important points as they flow. Writing will help to analyze thoroughly.

The main requirement is to do the exercise with due diligence and with an open mind.

We must convince ourselves and take-up the challenge, that change can change our life for good and prepare for the change.

It’s a continuous process and when we practice it on a regular basis, habit is formed to adopt to changing conditions and our belief system gets aligned with our WHY / PURPOSE / GOALS and help living a life of abundance.
