Dave and Andy

Dave and Andy went out for a walk in the park. It was a crisp fall day and the sunlight filtering through the trees took on that yellowish glow it gets when the leaves are at their peak of color before the brown of winter takes over. Dave inhaled deeply, basking in the smell and the color of autumn. Andy “snort5ed and shook his head.

Dave strode confidently through the piles of leaves gathering in spots on the path. Andy’s legs were much shorter and he trotted alongside, wanting desperately to keep up and not lag behind. Dave looked down at Andy and asked, “Doing alright Andy? Want me to slow down? Keeping up okay?

Andy smiled and trotted on. “Right as rain Dave-oh. Right as rain.” Then the mood struck him and he stopped to roll in a pile of leaves beside the path.

Dave rolled his eyes as Andy rolled in the leaves. He stood watching with his arms akimbo. “Come on Andy. We don’t have time for that now. We have places to go, people to see.”

Andy stopped momentarily and glanced over at Dave. “Just a little longer, please.” He pleaded but he could see that Dave was on a mission, so he got up and bounced over to Dave’s side. “Okaaay. Let’s go.”

Dave strode forward and soon became lost in thought. Andy trotted alongside. the thoughtful mood was cdatching. Andy looked up into the trees and suddenly couldn’t control himself. “You ever wonder what it’d be like to eat a squirrel Dave? That might ber good, you know?”

Dave looked askance at Andy and laughed quietly to himself. “Squirrels? I don’t think so Andy. We’re both pretty well fed and I don’t think that squirrel would provide much sustenance.”

Andy could barely contain his excitement. “I hear it tastes just like chicken. We could catch one of those little suckers and take him home and you could cook it up. I, personally might prefer it tartare, but you could have it with vegetables and stir fried or something. What do you say?”

“Don’t think so Andy. Come on. Let’s keep moving. Miles to go before I sleep, so they say.”

Andy gave a little sigh, but fell in beside Dave again, taking four steps for every one or two Dave took. The two of them fell into a rhythm, a regular pace and became lost in their own thoughts for a while. Then Andyh caught sight of Michelle and Connie. “Why don’t you ever bring home any girls Dave? I could use some female companionship every now and then Dave. Hey, you don’t want any girls. Nobody’s forcing you. Think about me though. You could bring a girl over for me Dave. What about it? Huh?”

Dave gave Andy a dirty look. “Just stop talking, will you Andy? That girl over there heard you. We don’t need strangers listening in on our conversations. So stop it.”

Andy looked hurt. He looked up at Dave with saddened brown eyes and whimpered a little. “Just trying….Oh forget it.”

Dave shook his head. “Besides, last time I had a girl over you embarassed the piss out of me. You got so excited you peed on the floor. Remember that?”

Andy remembered alright. He remembered it well. Regina was a real hotty. How was he expected to control himself when faced with that? Nevertheless he took a conciliatory tone. “Sorry Dave. I’m just a little excitable at times.”

Dave stopped and patted Andy on the head. “How about some steak tonight Andy? Sound good?”

Andy knew Dave was reaching out to him. He grinned a little grin. “Sure thing Dave. Sounds good to me.”

The two proceeded in silence for five minutes longer and they arrived back the building where they lived. Don, the doorman, held the door for them as they made their entry.

Dave nodded to Don and said, “Thanks Don. Have a good day.”

Andy grinned a big grin and said, “Yeah thanks Don. Couldn’t have done it without you.”

Amazement took control of Don the Doorman’s face. “Mr. Johnson? Did your dog just speak to me? What’s going on here?”

Dave and Andy just stared at Don. Dave finally broke the silence. “My dog?” He looked at Andy and said, “Speak boy, speak.”

Andy smiled broadly and said, very clearly, “Woof! Woof!”

Dave grinned from ear to ear. “Yeah Don, he spoke to you.” Then he laughed and he and Andy got on the elevator.

The elevator doors closed and Dave looked long and hard at Andy. “What have I told you about talking in front of strangers Andy?”

Andy wagged his tail playfully and did his doggy best to shrug. “What do I know? I’m just a dog. What say we watch a little Animal Planet with that steak?”
