An analysis of the relationship between online media consumption and political trust.

Social media takes a more important place in our lives now than ever. We could not imagine a life without Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the list goes on. Social media channels are not solely used for social communication purposes. It is no exception that politicians, CEO’s, NGO’s, lobbyist, etc. use their social media channels to show what they do in their daily lifes, their opinions and what matters through them. Through those personal messages people are, sometimes unknowingly, influenced. That influence raises questions. In this analysis some of those questions are tried to be answered.

The following research questions are composed:

Hypothese 1: there is a strong negative causal relationship between the consumption of social media by genaration Y and democratic support. The more young adults are using social media, the lesser democratic support is present.

Hypothese 2: political trust is negatively affected by the amount of exposure millenials experiences through social media.

Hypothese 3: fake news on social media channels contributes to lesser political trust from millenials.

Hypothese 1: Generation Y Facebook users are more likely to have less political trust than users from other social media channels.

Hypothese 2: LinkedIn users between 25 and 50 years old are more likely to show more positive behaviour towards politicians than users from other social media channels

Hyptothese 3: Generation Y Instagram users show no difference in political trust compared to users from other social media channels.
