Digital Twin Technology Building and Use

One stat I recently read claimed over five billion people use a cell phone. On top of the massive influx of data collected by apps and general usage, we also have the information collected from the three billion plus computer users. And many of those users have access to multiple devices. Outside of personal use, we are all exposed to technology numerous times daily. And each one of those interactions most likely collects some sort of data. So what do we do with this data, for the common good or bad? One interesting answer is digital twin technology.

While the above Wikipedia definition offers a thorough description, the takeaway is taking physical data and creating a virtual simulation to run virtual tests and processes, or for analyzing systems. NASA started the concept when building full scale mockups on ground, to mirror and diagnose issues that could happen in orbit. And with the increase of IoT sensor devices, this concept is now applied to virtually every industry imaginable; auto, healthcare, manufacturing, etc.

Although this concept is fascinating on its own, I became particularly interested while I began studying javascript and react. As I fall down the rabbit hole of learning state and object oriented programming, I read that “the digital twin model provides a powerful organizational tool to streamline data processing on the state of data sources instead of just the data within event streams”-ScaleOut Software.

One reason this technology is exciting for software engineers, is they can use object oriented programming techniques to work with it. One digital…
