College Football Rankings after Week 8

Entering the stretch.

Welcome to the MVP Chase, where I look for, or chase, the best objective criteria in determining greatness without personal subjective bias.

Today’s Topic: College football’s top 25 after Week 8

We have one more weekend of games the College Football Selection Committee releases their Top 25.

I have my own, based on three criteria:

The third requires a brief explanation. Several teams have lost only to an undefeated team, and by a narrow margin. Those are “good” losses, and they rank high. Oregon, on the other hand, lost to an undefeated team (Georgia) by six possession. Illinois’s one loss was narrow, but it was to a five-loss Indiana team. So they’re further down the list.

I quantify these criteria to come up with the following results. I’ll continue with this system to compare how it contrasts with the Playoff Committee each week.
