Blackish reinforces female empowerment

In the 2016 Blackish episode “Johnson & Johnson”, The black females are presented as confident, strong, independent, and in control of their male counterparts. The qualities of the black females in the episode of Blackish show a cultural transmission and send a great message of female empowerment.

Diane and Jack: The wedding

Diane and Jack Johnson, the youngest children of Bow and Dre’s family, are seen arguing through the episode like siblings do, but Diane is just trying to take authority. The two children bicker about who is doing what at their aunt Rhonda’s wedding and who will be the star of the show. They put on a performance of their wedding skills for their older brother and sister, Dre Jr. and Zoey Johnson , Jack hoping to be ring bearer and Diane knowing she will be picked for flower girl. The older siblings kind of laugh at them and Jack and Diane leave the room. Later in the episode Jack is sitting on his bed playing games and forgetting about his and Diane’s long held dreams of being the wedding stars, but that’s when Diane comes back in the picture not giving up and telling Jack that he will do nothing and that she will handle the whole thing, which Jack is definitely ok with Diane. Diane being the young, strong, courageous woman she is sends a message to all females especially younger girls that you can be strong and that you do not need a man to take charge.

Bow and Dre: The last name dilemma

Perhaps the most petty argument in the show is between married couple Bow “Johnson” and Dre “JOHNSON”, where Bow is able to think and speak her mind. The argument starts when Bow tells her husband that she took her own last name and not his, already you can see how stupid this argument is because they have the same last name. Bow taking her own last name even though it is the same and arguing about it enforces the norm that women are now independent, strong, and can stand up to men. Once more we see the show writers pushing a norm of female strength in the world today.

The 2016 episode of Blackish, “Johnson & Johnson”, is a positive piece of media. Even though Blackish is a funny sit com, it conveys good messages that are big social topics in today’s world such as female empowerment. A lot of media today is only sending messages like fame and wealth and that can lead to many problems for people internally, and that is why we need more things like Blackish to shift away from the bad topics and move towards better messages.
