Third looked at her, “What?”

“The ritual of conversion or whatever they did to the family.”

“First off,” Third started gesturing for the reader to depart, “It wasn’t a standard conversion. There is a difference.”

“How so?”

“Normally they find someone who is willing and cooperative,” He started to explain it in detail.

“Wait,” Ames interrupted, “People are willing and cooperative?”

Third paused and thought about his answer, “I have only a vague level understanding for the fangs, mostly what I studied this morning. But it is heavily referenced to being a relatively painless process if the subjects are cooperative.”

“No, I mean who would be cooperative.”

“Ah, that would be the standard collection of lower members of the human strata. The effect can be rather euphoric, or so they claim. So it has a strong appeal to people who are struggling with addictive substances.”

Ames nodded, “The last big fix?”

Third nodded, “Yes. I understand it is quite powerful and there is always a demand for it. Especially as it is able to free them from other addictions.”

“So if it can be euphoric, what is the problem?”

Third coughed, “Detective, I assume you have a decent understanding of human reproduction.”

Ames nodded but only in half understanding, “So?”

“Ask your question again, but from a purely human perspective. A man forcing himself on others versus two lovers embracing.”

Ames blushed, “Ah, of course. So they are more violent, more brutal because they are forcing this on someone.”

Third nodded, “Correct. Cooperation is always preferred.”

“Walk me through it then.”

Third arranged several things in front of him and then pulled out some files.

“The process is a violent one, as is every birthing process. This is focused on replacing the host creature with a new life form, and they must tear down the original organism in the process.”
