Gray Days

Since my adult life began with responsibilities and worries, I’ve had a chart to assess my days, as well as a traffic light to navigate the day with peace of mind:

Since I closed my businesses in October, all my days have been gray with occasional glimpses of yellow, like cloudy days when the sun suddenly peeks through. Today is one of those days, I will forever mark May 25, 2023, as a gray day, after having experienced three consecutive yellow days after a long time.

And why is this one special? Well, because for me, with my depression I feel, seeing future projects that I was passionate about coming together was the fuel I needed to take off. For the past three days, I’ve been working like crazy to move the project forward. Last night, I received news that let me know today would be a gray day, and as soon as I opened my eyes, I received THE NEWS. The positive side is that I didn’t have to wait the whole day to embrace my gray day.

So here I am, in my daily therapy, writing and thinking “What’s next?” Today, after that phone call, I didn’t feel like getting out of bed. Everything I had already prepared, all the hours I dedicated to the project, canceling my playtime with my daughter to progress faster, all that time ended up being just that — a project that won’t have yellow days, yet.

While having breakfast with my wife, who is “my yellow person”, she who always lights up the room se enters and brings smiles with her presence, two of the thousands of qualities that made me fall in love with her, she said to me, “It’s up to you to turn this gray day into a yellow day, and it’s so easy for you to do that you don’t even realize it. What will make your day better is within you.”

That’s when it clicked for me. Improving my day now solely depends on me and no one else. It doesn’t depend on having a good day at the office, closing a sale, or simply not spilling my coffee. It depends on me and making the most of my time doing things that will make everything better. For example, sitting down to write this, then heading down to the gym for a run, reading that article I’ve been putting off, eating my favorite pasta, and listening to uplifting music while I cook it.

Today, I learned a valuable lesson from my life teacher, my wife, and that is that I can be the wind that moves the clouds in my head and turn each day into a yellow day. I know that in the future, there will be gray and black days that nothing and no one can change, but at this moment in my life, today,I don’t have time to stop and crush my dreams. It’s time to get up, pursue them, and achieve them.

So remember, in times of gray days, when we are feeling down and facing challenges, it’s important to remember that we have the power to influence our own mindset and perspective. Let me give you some suggestions to help you turn a gray day into a yellow day:

Practice gratitude, engage in self-care, reached out to love ones, set small goals, practice mindfulness, and remember, gray days are a natural part of life, but the don’t define our entire journey.
