Top 5 Retro Gaming YouTube Channels

Follow my work enough and one of the things you will find out about me is my love for retro video games. While I have always loved the classics, I only really discovered quality retro gaming YouTube content recently. I decided to share my five favorite YouTube retro gaming-related channels. If you agree with my list or think I missed something let me know and if you haven’t heard of these channels before, please check out their content.

The best way I can describe Coury Carlson and Marc “Try” Duddleson’s love for retro video games is — infectious. If you have ever had an opportunity to watch their Sunday night retro gaming streams you will know exactly what I mean. They approach retro gaming with an enthusiasm that I remember having for these very same games in my youth. I find their demeanor friendly and approachable even though their content can sometimes be on the technical side of things. They do take their time to explain that technical content in layman’s terms though. I have personally learned a lot from their channel.

They feature documentary-style content that is incredibly well-edited and easy to follow. I was surprised to find out that the collaboration between Coury and Try is done remotely because the content created between the two of them is seamless as if they were in the same room.

I highly recommend checking out their in-progress Analogue Frontiers series, which is a series focused on the “people and technology behind keeping classic gaming alive.” They also feature a documentary style of videos on developers like M2, currently best known for their recently produced retro rereleases of games such as Phantasy Star, Castlevania Anniversary Collections, and TurboGrafx 16 Mini game collection.

By far my favorite time spent on their channel is during their laid-back Sunday night streams that feature either Coury or Try playing through an old classic or a modern “retro-style” game. The entire session that usually lasts three hours is a discussion and celebration of video games. It’s my favorite way to unwind on a Sunday night.
