Bold and Decorative Paintings and Fashion Illustrations by Bijou Karman

New featured illustrator on Ape on the Moon

There’s a strength in the expressions of the ladies staring out of Bijou’s illustrations that balances perfectly with the contrasting of delicately brushed lines and elaborate forms.

She talks to us about the techniques she uses to move her initial sketches onto canvas, and how they can vary when working on her fashion illustrations.

“I’m an Illustrator; I work with clients on editorial projects and I make paintings. I paint with acrylic gouache on paper and use Procreate for the iPad Pro to create my illustrations.”

“My process begins with gathering reference imagery for the assignment or painting, creating digital sketches, and then moving on to the final image either digitally, painted by hand, or a mix of both using Photoshop.”

“The goal of my client work is to satisfy the assignment while also creating an image I’m excited about.”
